National
Museum of Fine Arts
The National Museum of Fine Arts holds a selected and
affluent artwork selection, many of which were created
by artists that worked in Malta. The museum contains the
best painting collection of Mattia Preti in a public museum;
a good number of works of Antoine de Favray, in addition
to works of Guido Reni, Juseppee de Rivera, Carla Maratta,
several sketches of Melchior Gafa, as well as a great
collection of sculptures of Antonio Sciortino.
The basement also contains an excellent evocative collection
of memorabilia connected with the time the Order of the
Knights of St John spent in Malta. The most remarkable
feature of this building is the scenographic staircase
constructed in the eighteenth century, one of Valletta's
most beautiful examples of rococo interiors.
