Maritime
Museum
The Birgu Maritime Museum, officially inaugurated in 1992,
is considered to be one of the most important museums
relating to the British colonial period and to that of
the Order of St. John. The building was originally used
as the Royal Naval Bakery from where supplied the royal
navy the daily bread consumption of 15,000 men.
In the museum are exposed several aspects of the maritime
and naval activities of the Maltese islands, including
models of ships, books, paintings, navigation instruments,
weapons, cannons and uniforms.
Particularly large sections are dedicated to the Navy
of the Order of St. John, the history of Malta's Customs,
Fisheries and Merchant Marine and as well as a large display
relating to the Royal Navy in Malta.
