National
Museum of Natural History
The National Museum of Natural History, officially inaugurated
on June 23th of 1973, is in the old magisterial palace
or Vilhena palace. Among the museum collections are examples
of both local as well as exotic fauna.
The displays cover various topics from Maltese Geology
and Palaeontology to birds, shells and local mammals.
An extensive collection of rocks and minerals is also
on display. Between the new exhibitions rooms are the
ones on the human evolution, the sharks and their habitat
and the breeding birds of Malta.
The museum is the national repository of biological specimens
and offers its collections for study. There is at the
moment an important project of restoration of the palace
and the surrounding bastion, therefore some parts of the
museum are closed the public.
