Ghar Dalam Cave
The underground cave of Ghar Dalam (Dark Cave) was the
home of the Neolithic inhabitants of the island, 6000
years ago. Excavations made between 1933 and 1937 bring
to the light a great amount of prehistoric animals bones:
elephants, hippopotamus, deers and other animals that
walked through Europe million years ago, which demonstrates
that the island once was a part of the continent.
Now it’s possible to observe some of these rests
in the small museum of the place. The cave itself has
200 meters in length, 18 meters wide and between 3 and
6 meters of height. It was excavated on the soft limestone
rock by the action of rain several million years ago,
and gave refuge to the inhabitants of the island during
long time. More exactly until 1911, moment at which the
settlers of the cave were evacuated by the government
in forecast of the next excavations.
