Gozo
Sister island of Malta and the second greatest of the
archipelago. The landscape is marked by flat tops hills,
cliffs, steep valleys and the villas that appear between
the plantations of peach, lemon, olive and orange trees.
In spring the island shines with the colours of the blooming
flowers. The capital of Gozo is Victory (also known as
Rabat), a town constructed by the Arabs in a hill with
panoramic views of all of the island.
The cathedral does not have any vault but it has a trompe
l'oeil painting that gives the illusion of one. The archaeology
museum contains the rest of a Roman shipwreck in the island
and objects found in the Neolithic temple of Ggantija
archaeological excavation. There are alabaster caves in
Xaghra, where beautiful stalactites and stalagmites can
be admired. These underground caves are known as grotto
Xerri and grotto Ninu.
The basilica of Ta´Pinu, near the village of Gharb,
is one of the most beautiful Maltese churches and an official
place for the Vatican pilgrimage. Xewkija is a small city
with a church constructed around the old church of the
parish of St. John Baptist.
