• Our vision is a world where languages bring people together

Academic Term / Exam Preparation

Many people need to pass a particular English exam in order to immigrate, be accepted into university or get a certain internship or job.

There are also many people who do an exam preparation course because of its structure and to add depth to their language studies.

Spending the months abroad that will be necessary to prepare you for an international examination will not only help you to fully immerse yourself in the language but will also give a prestigious addition to your CV.

At Sprachcaffe St. Julians, we offer preparation courses for Cambridge EFL exams and IELTS in long-term courses that last from 9 to 12 weeks. When participating in an examination preparation course, your progress will be regularly monitored in order to help you learn what is necessary to pass the exam.  Your teacher will also give you periodic individual guidance to help you on your way.

Depending on the exam you choose, your teacher will not only help you to learn and develop your grammar, vocabulary, speaking and listening skills but also help you with a particular feature and "tricks" of the exam. Sprachcaffe students have high passing rates and we are very proud of our highly-respected examination preparation courses.

Examination fees are not included in the course price but are paid separately at the school during your preparation course.

Course Material

Our examination preparation courses use specialised course material which not only helps students improve their English but also prepares them to sit for their exam and include challenging activities and periodic evaluations so they can easily see and measure their progress.  Our preparation courses are all 9 to 12 weeks long as that is the amount of time it takes to cover the syllabus of the examinations.  Students must purchase a course book at a cost of €33-€47.  All other course material such as mock exams is included in the price.

Cambridge Certificate Examinations overview:

Cambridge Preliminary English Test--PET recognises the ability to cope with everyday written and spoken communication. It indicates an ability to deal with situations which require a predictable use of language, read simple textbooks and articles, and write simple personal letters.

Cambridge First Certificate in English--FCE recognises the ability to deal confidently with a range of written and spoken communication. Successful candidates will have a wide grasp of vocabulary, should be able to construct an argument and use appropriate communication styles for a variety of situations.

Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English--CAE is an advanced exam, and is for learners who have reached a standard of English that is adequate for most purposes. Success at this level indicates the ability to use English effectively and perform confidently in social and professional situations, and in higher education.

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English--CPE is the highest level of the Cambridge exams and is recognised by universities and employers around the world. CPE is for learners who have achieved a high level of language skills and are approaching a standard of English similar to that of a native speaker.

IELTS overview:

International English Language Testing System--IELTS is a standardised exam used primarily for university entrance (Academic Paper) and immigration (General Paper).  One can take this exam no matter one's level of proficiency as scores are in bands from 1 (non-user) to 9 (expert user).  To participate in a preparation course at Sprachcaffe, however, one must have at least a B1 level of English.

Joining an Examination Preparation Course

The first two days of examination courses are taken up by Cambridge or IELTS testing (depending on the course you chose), therefore you will spend your first Monday and Tuesday testing.  These tests can only be done at the school.  From there we will be able to tell whether:

1) we have enough students at the same level to open a Cambridge or IELTS course (we need a minimum of 4 students per class) and

2) an individual student tests at the required level to join a Cambridge or IELTS course.  If we are not able to open an examination course, which is highly unlikely, or if you do not test at the required level to join, you will be assigned to a General English course at your appropriate level.
