English Course Overview

Standard Course

The Standard English Course is the most popular and often-booked type of course in Malta. It offers students the perfect balance between language training and leisure time. Normally students spend 3 hours a day studying and have the rest of the day to enjoy themselves.

An integrated skills approach helps students to develop fluency in speaking, listening, reading and writing and the teachers ensure that the grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation components are applied to actual language use. We use the most up-to-date and interactive teaching techniques and material that help students quickly improve their English.

Although our Standard Courses follow a set course book, our teachers assess their students' learning needs and objectives on the first day of their course and throughout their stay, and adapt their lessons accordingly. In this way, our students are motivated to keep improving, while also having a good time.

Our main course book, English File Third Edition, allows students to learn the language using real-life contexts with lively, interesting reading and listening texts, challenging activities and periodic evaluations so they can see and measure their progress. Each level is designed to take 16 weeks to complete as during that time a student can cover the entire syllabus of the level and should then automatically advance to the following level provided their attendance is 80% or above. Students must purchase a course book on arrival at a cost of โ‚ฌ30. Students staying less than 4 weeks can return their book, in perfect condition, for a refund less a weekly usage fee of โ‚ฌ7.50.

  • Minimum duration: 1 week
  • Minimum age for adult courses: 18 years old
  • Levels: A0/Beginners, A1/Elementary, A2/Pre-Intermediate, B1/Intermediate, B2/Upper Intermediate, C1/Advanced

Intensive Course

An Intensive Language Course at Sprachcaffe St. Julians is the ideal choice for those students who are ready to spend a bit more time to get quicker and more in-depth results in learning English.

If you wish to improve your level of English quickly, then look no further and book an intensive course at Sprachcaffe St. Julians. The additional lessons give one the opportunity to gain more practice in using the language while still having time for afternoon leisure activities.

The first four lessons of each day are the same as the Standard English Course and therefore focus on integrated skills work using our main course book, English File Third Edition. The last two lessons of each day use no set course book and can vary in their focus but most common themes are listening & speaking and extension of areas covered in the morning lessons.

English File allows students to learn the language using real-life contexts with lively, interesting reading and listening texts, challenging activities and periodic evaluations so they can easily see and measure their progress. Each level is designed to take 16 weeks to complete as during that time a student can cover the entire syllabus of the level and should then automatically advance to the following level as long as their attendance is 80% or above. Students must purchase a course book on arrival at a cost of โ‚ฌ30. Students staying less than 4 weeks can return their book, in perfect condition, for a refund less a weekly usage fee of โ‚ฌ7.50.

One-to-one lessons are the best way forward for students who need or desire individual attention and want to focus on particular problem areas and goals. Our teachers will provide tailor-made lessons coupled with their undivided attention to guarantee the best and quickest results.

The format, content and style of the lessons can be discussed and the student's needs and desires will be respected and taken into consideration wherever possible. When booking individual lessons it is a good idea to let the school know your particular ideas, requirements and interests beforehand so the best-suited teacher can be assigned for you.

Academic Term / Exam Preparation (Cambridge Certificate / IELTS / TOEFL)

Many people need to pass a particular English exam in order to immigrate, be accepted into university or get a certain internship or job. There are also many people who do an exam preparation course because of its structure and to add depth to their language studies.
Spending the months abroad that will be necessary to prepare you for an international examination will not only help you to fully immerse yourself in the language but will also give a prestigious addition to your CV.

At Sprachcaffe St. Julians, we offer preparation courses for Cambridge EFL exams and IELTS in long-term courses that last 12 weeks. When participating in an examination preparation course, your progress will be regularly monitored in order to help you learn what is necessary to pass the exam. Your teacher will also give you periodic individual guidance to help you on your way. Depending on the exam you choose, your teacher will not only help you to learn and develop your grammar, vocabulary, speaking and listening skills but also help you with a particular feature and "tricks" of the exam. Sprachcaffe students have high passing rates and we are very proud of our highly-respected examination preparation courses.Examination fees are not included in the course price but are paid separately at the school during your preparation course.

Our examination preparation courses use specialised course material which not only helps students improve their English but also prepares them to sit for their exam and include challenging activities and periodic evaluations so they can easily see and measure their progress. Our preparation courses are 12 weeks long as that is the amount of time it takes to cover the syllabus of the examinations. Students must purchase a course book at a cost of โ‚ฌ33-โ‚ฌ47. All other course material such as mock exams is included in the price.

The first two days of examination courses are taken up by Cambridge or IELTS testing (depending on the course you chose), therefore you will spend your first Monday and Tuesday testing. These tests can only be done at the school. From there we will be able to tell whether:

1) we have enough students at the same level to open a Cambridge or IELTS course (we need a minimum of 4 students per class) and

2) an individual student tests at the required level to join a Cambridge or IELTS course. If we are not able to open an examination course, which is highly unlikely, or if you do not test at the required level to join, you will be assigned to a General English course at your appropriate level.
